Treatments For Cancer

Treatments for cancer are specifically designed to destroy cancer cells. These cancer cells generally grow in numbers much faster than normal cells.  The treatments for cancer are under constant on going research, and with vast amounts of funds and manpower being expended yearly to find new treatments.  All treatments for cancer are developed through research and a sequence of extensive experiments. The first step is conducted in the laboratory. The second step uses animals for testing or preclinical testing. The third step is conducted on patients or clinical trials. Then there is the time it takes to gain approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Cancer Treatment

Cancer treatment plans may be conducted over a long period of time to prolong survival.  These treatments for cancer will include an assessment of how treatments for cancer side effects will be tolerated over time.  The treatments are available for most cancers. A good example is the treatment for prostate cancer.  It may involve watching and waiting, and then surgery, radiation therapy, or hormonal therapy if required.  Treatments are available for all women with breast cancer, whatever the stage may be, the earlier the better.  There can be risks associated with treatments for cancer.

There are treatments called targeted cancer treatments are which are specific drugs that attack or bind to a specific molecule or part of a molecule, such as one that triggers tumor growth or controls blood flow. These treatments have been around for many years. The cancer treatment options will vary, because it depends on the type of cancer, the stage of cancer and other medical factors.

Alternative Cancer Treatments

Alternative cancer treatments are being utilized by millions of patients. These treatments can either as stand alone therapy, or combined with traditional therapies.  Today many cancer treatment centers use both. Most alternative treatments treat the entire body and unlike surgery it will not spread the cancer.  Alternative cancer treatments are becoming more popular, because people find it is a viable option for traditional medical treatments.  Alternative medicine techniques concentrate on reducing or eliminate the over looked underlying problems that allowed the cancer to develop.  This is done by activating the body's own healing process so that the body will heal itself.

Chemotherapy Treatment

Chemotherapy treatment is the treatment of cancer with drugs that can destroy cancer cells.  Chemotherapy treatment or Cytotoxic chemotherapy attacks and kills cancer cells and even some rapidly growing normal cells, such as the cells in the hair follicles.  Chemotherapy is very similar to radiation therapy. Its strategy is to stop the cancerous cells from duplicating. Chemotherapy can be administered through the veins, injected directly into a body cavity or delivered orally in the form of a pill.  This treatment usually lasts a maximum of six sessions.

Radiation Treatment

Radiation Treatment or Radiation therapy, also called radiotherapy, X-ray therapy, or irradiation, is the use of ionizing radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors.  Radiation therapy can be administered externally via external beam radiotherapy or internally via brachytherapy.  Basically, radiation therapy injures or destroys cells in the area being treated or the target tissue by damaging their genetic material. These treatments for cancer makes it impossible for these cells to continue to grow and divide.  Radiation therapy can be used to treat almost every type of solid tumor. This includes cancers of the brain, breast, cervix, larynx, lung, pancreas, prostate, skin, stomach, uterus, or soft tissue sarcomas.  In some cases radiation is also used to treat leukemia and lymphoma.

Treatments for cancer can vary with different types of cancer and the latest research.  The quality of care and success rate of treatments for cancer vary from one cancer treatment center to another.  The results are also effect by early detection, patients general health and desire to survive.
